About Us

Elwood Haynes Elementary School is a neighborhood elementary school, which focuses on inquiry-based instruction that nurtures the spirit of curiosity, questioning, and an openness to new ideas. Founded in 1954, the school is named for Kokomo’s Elwood Haynes, who excelled in chemistry and metallurgy. Mr. Haynes experimented with early engines and automotive development, while being credited with building one of the first automobiles, as well as developing stainless steel and the alloy known as Stellite.

To foster a sense of innovation, and to engage students, Elwood Haynes staff recently developed a Robotics Club (for 5th-graders), which challenges students to plan and create a robot for competition against other schools.

Elwood Haynes houses a Community Preschool for children, ages 3 to 5. This preschool program is rated Level 3 in Indiana Paths to Quality. Several options are available to parents, including half-day sessions, which are free to qualified students. A Special Education Preschool also is located at Elwood Haynes.

School Hours: 9:05 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
